Raw Milk Herd Share
It is illegal for anyone to sell fresh unprocessed milk in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Each state makes up its own guidelines regarding fresh milk, and the Commonwealth of Virginia has chosen to go beyond the FDA regulations regarding the sale of fresh unprocessed milk and make it illegal. While it is illegal to sell fresh milk, the Law in the Commonwealth of Virginia is structured to allow the consumption of fresh milk from an animal that an individual owns or owns a stake in. Unless you have a cow in your backyard, you need a herdshare to enjoy fresh milk in Virginia. A herdshare works like this: We do all the hard work - milking, bottling, cleaning, grazing, doctoring, delivering etc. We do all this for you for your weekly boarding fee. It's that simple.
How a Herd Share Works
You buy a portion/share of our dairy herd. We sell you that share which makes you part owner in our herd.
With this ownership you are able to reap the benefits of owning cows without having to do all the hard work.
You pay a weekly boarding fee and receive milk and/or dairy products in return!
Farm Pickup
Pick up your dairy straight from the farm! Open every day of the week except Sunday's.
Do you just get milk with your share?
No, you can request that Thompson Family Farm process your share of milk into other dairy products, such as yogurt, butter, and heavy cream.
BOARDING FEE =
Milk cost
We have two categories for our boarding fees.
1. Owners who pick up from the Farm.
2. Owners who pick up from a delivery location.
Farm pick up owners will be charged a boarding fee of $10 for every 1 gallon of milk they receive.
Delivery pick up will be a boarding fee of $12 for every 1 gallon of milk.

BUY-IN Price
In order to become part owner in our herd there is a purchase price for your share.
Shares equate to the number of gallons you would like to receive each week.
Our share prices are:
$5 - half gallon
$10 - gallon
So if you would like to receive 2 gallons a week your INITIAL buy-in will be $20. This is a one time fee to become an owner in the herd.
